BUSHONG LINEAGE: Michael Schwartz, husband of Eva Elizabeth Bushong/ Johann Nicholas Bushong and Anna Magdalena Schaffner/ Hans John Bushong (III) and Anna Maria Bushong/ Hans Boschung (II) and Anna Stocker/ Hans Boschung (I) and Anna Anneler/ Michael Studer-Boschung and Dichti Jaggi

The November 6, 1786, Bond for the Michael Schwartz Estate. For Susannah Schwartz (his second wife)

Johann Nicholas Bushong and Anna Magdalena Schaffner the 1732 Colonial immigrants, are known to have had six children, all born in Germany. When they arrived in Pennsylvania, there were four children surviving, listed: Andreas, Heinrich, Maria, and Eve.
Children of Johann Nicholas Bushong and Anna Magdalena Schaffner
  1. Maria Barbara Boschung, was born November 15, 1715 in Schmalenberg, Súdwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and died, young, in Schmalenberg, Súdwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
  2. Johann Anton Andreas Boschung/Anthony Andrew Bushong was born Jan 30, 1717 in Schmalenberg, Súdwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. He was confirmed at the Reformed Parish, Waldfischbach, Südwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Andrew died about 1790 in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky.
  3. Maria Barbara Juliana Bushong (Meixel) was born April 2, 1719 in Schmalenberg, Súdwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and died February 1805 in Leacock Twp., Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
  4. Johann George Henrich Bushong was born Jan 3, 1722 in Schmalenberg, Súdwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and died after 1774, possibly Rockingham County, Virginia.
  5. Eva Elisabetha Bushong (Schwartz) was born March 19, 1724 in Schmalenberg, Súdwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, was baptized in Waldfischbach, Súdwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and died before 1770 in York, or Berks County, Pennsylvania.
  6. Johann Nicolas Boschung Jr. was born April 26, 1727 in Schmalenberg, Súdwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. was baptized in Waldfischbach, Súdwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and inevitably died in 1732 at sea, aboard the Pink "John and William" crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
Their youngest daughter, Eva Elisabetha Bushong, married Michael Schwartz. Like many Pennsylvania church wedding records of the period, their's has yet to be located. But the marriage can be established by church records of their children's births and baptisms. If they were married a year or so prior to their first child's, birth, then their marriage would be about 1756 or 1757. Eva would have been about 32 years old. From York County, Pennsylvania, church records, Eva and Michael are known to have had five children.

    Eva's and Michael's children
  1. Anna Margaret Schwartz: Birth: January 25 1758, Baptism: February 12 1758. Parents: Michael Schwartz wife Eva Busching, Sponsors: George Dietz, Margaret Schmid
  2. Johann Michael Schwartz: Birth: August 3 1760. Baptism: August 3 1760. Parents: Michael and Eva Buschung Sponsors: Michael Konig and Catharina
  3. Anna Elisabeta Schwartz, Birth: January 9 1763; Baptism: January 16 1763 Parents: Michael and Eva Buschung Sponsors: Johann Georg Buschung, and Anna Elisabeta Dellinger
  4. John Schwartz: Birth: August 7 1765 Christening: August 11 1765 Father's Name: Michael Schwartz, mother Eva
  5. Eva Schwartz: Birth: November 25 1767 Christening: December 13 1767 Father's Name: Michael Schwartz, mother Eva
  6. *there could be others that did not survive or aren't listed

Aside from her children, little else of Eva's life in York County is known. However, two of her Bushong 1st cousins, John (V) and Jacob, also lived in York County and raised large families. Eva is thought to have died, in York County, Pennsylvania, sometime before 1770, when Michael has remarried and has a son, George Valentine Schwartz. Michael Schwartz's second wife was Susannah Lorah, who was born in 1752, in Amity, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Michael and Susannah had four children.
    Michael and Susannah's four children
  1. George Valentine Schwartz, Jan 6 1770
  2. Michael Schwartz, born 1776
  3. John Schwartz, born 1776
  4. Barbara Schwartz, born 1778

Michael died intestate, leaving no Will, in 1786 and his estate was settled as reflected in these probate papers. However, after looking at the estate, it should be apparent that there are some conflicts between the number of children, as well as names and dates for the children from Michael's two wives.
Wife Susannah... Issue Six children... George Schwartz, eldest son and heir at law of Michael Schwartz... and Michael, John, Anna Margaret, Elizabeth and Barbara. The said Michael, John, and Barbara being yet in the minority... [as of June 14 1791].
Extracted from Michael Schwartz's 1786 estate papers
If George Schwartz is the eldest son, then that means that Michael and Eva lost three children, prior to his death. Also, he used the same names of "John" and "Michael" when he had sons by his second marriage. Allowing this, we can say that Eva's and Michael's children, Michael, John, and Eva died before 1786, Further, two of their daughters, Anna Margaret and Elizabeth, would have indeed been above the age of minority, when the estate was filed in 1786, so that all fits.

But there is one remaining conflict that should be discussed. Eva's and Michael's oldest daughter, Anna Margaret. From existing genealogies, Margaret married Michael Ness. Michael Ness happens to be a son of John Jacob Ness, who immigrated to Pennsylvania on the Britannia, 1731, The Ness family along with the Schwartz and Hans Boschung families knew each other from the voyage. Apparently, by 1784, Margaret had married because she had a daughter, Maria Magdalena Ness. If this is correct, it is not explainable why her name in the probate was not listed, Anna Margaret Ness or something similar. Further, existing genealogies, say that Margaret died "after July 5, 1784", but the date isn't known. Well, her father, Michael Schwartz, died in 1786 and the probate papers which date from 1786 to 1792 list her as a Schwartz. Aside from the name discrepancy, the 1792 date is certainly after the 1784. And Margaret's husband remarried and had a son in 1794. Also, Jacob Ness' second wife was born in 1772, and she would have been 22 years old when her first child was born, which is completely plausible. So it could be calculated that Margaret died as late as the 1792 probate settlement.

Following Michael's death, Susannah is remarried to a Jacob Gunkle, who is mentioned as her husband in the estate papers in 1792.

More about Michael Schwartz
A little over a year before Eva Bushong immigrated, as listed in Professor I Daniel Rupp's 30,000 Names book, is the Ship Britannia which arrived in Philadelphia on Sept 21, 1731. Along with Hans and Barbara Boschung and their children were five immigrants named Schwartz. Along with a George Wilhelm, 22, are four other Schwartz passengers were, Hendrich Ludwig Schwartz, age 42, Maria Elisabeth Schwartz, 36 and two children, under age 16, Justus Rupert Schwartz, 11 and Johannes Schwartz, 8. Hendrich and Maria are believed to be Michael's parents and it is also thought that Johannes is Michael. Schwartz. His full name would be Johannes Michael Schwartz, which is virtually the same as his first son's name. From the American Revolutionary War, there is a Michael Schwartz, listed in the Pennsylvania, Revolutionary War Battalions and Militia Index, for military service between 1775 and 1783.
