Maria Barbara Juliana Bushong, daughter of Johann Nicholas Bushong and Anna Magdalena Schaffner, was born on Feb. 4, 1719,1; 2; View original. in Schmalenberg, Südwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany and died in Feb. 1805,3 in Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She married in 1743 to Hans Martin Meixel in the Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.4 Hans Martin Meixel was born on Oct. 2, 1713 in Leimen, Baden, Germany and died on Jun. 30, 1789 in Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.5
At her baptism, she was called Maria Barbara.1; 2 When she arrived the Pink "John and William in 1732, the ship's passenger manifest, listed her simply as Maria.6 Yet when she was married, she called herself Juliana, which is a very unusual name in the Bushong family.7 From the Bushong United Tree, it can be seen that only on her uncle Hans' side of the family, was there a Juliana. However, that was Juliana Weigel. (1733-1810), wife of Jacob Bushong, and she was named by the Weigel family, so it did not originate in Bushong family. Even though, on August 14, 1753, she and Jacob named their daughter Juliana, who was obviously name after her mother. Aside from that, and again from the tree, the only other Juliana Bushong in close to 200 years, was Maria Juliana Bushong, born in 1746.8 She was a daughter of our Juliana's brother, Andrew and Maria Catrina Bushong and she was baptized in Cocalico, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. So, with the limited available Bushong women this has to be Nicholas and Magdalena's daughter. When our Juliana's brother, Andrew named his daughter, she was named for her aunt and after his sister. Also lending credibility to this point is the naming patterns of her siblings, Andrew, and Henry, who also are known to have had three Christian names, Johann Anton Andreas and Johann George Heinrich Bushong.
Juliana and Martin were married in the Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Lancaster County, in 1747.4 She would have been about 28 years old. It should be mentioned, the name Meixel has several different spellings. One unique version is on Martin's tombstone, "Meicell." Others spellings are "Mikesell" and "Meyssel". Further, the name often has a double "L" on the end, but this is a later mistake and "Meixel" is the correct spelling. Martin was born in Leimen, Baden, Germany,8 which interestingly, is only about 64 miles (103 km) away from the Waldfischbach and Schmalenberg area of Germany, where Juliana was from born.1; 2 The two lived in the Upper Leacock Township, where Martin obtained a 264 acre land warrant, dated February 19, 1734, from his father, Andreas Meixel. He patented it May 24 1753, View survey map- Andreas is more or less middle. Juliana and Andreas were to eventually have seven children,7; 8 some of which were baptized in the Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
- Johannes Meixel was born on Aug. 29, 1744 in New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died on May 24, 1822 in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
- Catharina Christina Meixel was born on Sep. 1, 1747 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died on Aug. 30, 1769 in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
- Jacob Meixell was born on Aug. 29, 1752 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died on Jan. 21, 1824 in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
- Martin Meixel, II was born on Feb. 19, 1756 in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died on Nov. 20, 1823.
- Andrew Meixell was born About 1760 in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died on Dec. 1, 1839.
- Juliana Meixel (Zuber) was born on Jun. 16, 1762 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died on Feb. 14, 1825 in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
- Ann Eve Meixel (Heller) was born About 1764 in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died ____.
The Mixel Family*; sic
Martin Mixel was one of the early pioneers who sought a home in upper Leacock. A brother accompanied Martin to America, but was either lost or captured by the Indians. Martin was a landholder in 1735, and died at a "great old age" during the early part of the American Revolution. The land which was held by Martin extended from Machanicsburg to Bearville on the south side of the pike and east of the Garber plantation. Universal tradition has it that Mixel built his first house near a spring on a farm now owned by Adam Miller, but occupied by his son Sheaffer. No traces of this house can be seen except for the cellar excavations. Martin had three sons,- Jacob, John, and George. Jacob inherited his father's estate in portion, and also erected the Midway Hotel between Mechanicsburg and Bareville. Jacob had one daughter, an only child, who married Hiram Batten, whose son, Israel, still resides upon a small tract of land of the original Mixel plantation and is the only lineal descendant of this noted family.9
* Not completely correct, Martin had a son named Andrew. Also Andrew died in 1789, after the America Revolutionary War.

Martin died in 17895 and was buried in the Salem Evangelical Reformed
Church, Hellers, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, along many Bushongs. A photograph of his tombstone is viewable on his FindaGrave memorial,
Juliana Bushong Meixel died in 1805 and is probably buried there too, but there is no tombstone. It should be noted, many charts show Juliana's death in 1797. However, the mistake is from her will which was dated 1797 but she died in 1805 and the will was probated in Feb. 1805.
Perhaps it is of interest, from her will, Johann Jacob Swope and Johann Daniel Swope, it turns out, are sons of Johannes Schwob, (aka John Swope) and his first wife, (Anna Dorthea Lein) making them great uncles to Catherine Swope (1829-1901), wife of Henry Bushong (1825-1891).7 But, there would be no further associations between the Swopes and Bushongs for many years, until 1848, when Catherine Swope and Henry Bushong were married in Lancaster County.
CATHERINE SWOPE LINEAGE: Catherine Swope/ George Swope

But the association of Adam Wenger, with the Bushong family, is actually a
significant relationship, because Adam Wenger, is
undoubtedly from Leacock Township, and is a brother of Barbara Wenger (about 1761-____), wife
of Peter Bushong (1762-1833).7

Daughter of Johann Nicholas Bushong and Anna Magdalena Schaffner, Eva Elisabetha Bushong (Schwartz) was born on Mar. 19, 1724, 8; 9 in Schmalenberg, Südwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany and died Before 1770 in Tulpehocken, Berks County, Pennsylvania.11 She married Michael Schwartz Before 1757 in York County, Pennsylvania,11 and died in Nov. 1786 in Tulpehocken, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Michael Schwartz, the son of Heinrich Ludwig Schwartz and Maria Elizabeth Schwartz6 was born About 1726 in <Germany> and died in Nov. 1786 in Tulpehocken, Berks County, Pennsylvania. From church records, Eva and Michael had five children together.7; 8 They were all baptized in the Christ Lutheran Church in York town.8
The Christ Lutheran Church in York, where Eva and Michael's five children were baptized. Many Bushongs were also baptized there in the same period.
|
|
Following her parents deaths, Eva lived, for about 25 years in Lancaster County, In about 1757, at 33 years old, she married Michael Schwartz. Though no marriage record has been seen, the baptism records for three children of Michael Schwartz and wife Eva Bushung, listed in 1758, 1760, and 1763,8 all confirm that "Eva Busching" was the wife of Michael Schwartz. In 1765 and 1767 Michael Schwartz and wife listed only as Eva, had two more children.8
When she was married, Eva was one of the two single Bushong daughters, living in the Lancaster area who were to old enough to marry.7 In 1757, the choices would be Eva or Christina, who was a daughter of Hans and Barbara. However, with no other name proven associated with Christina, and all records showing Eva as the mother, then it is necessary to discount Hans' daughter as a wife of Michael Schwartz. Based on this evidence, it can only be concluded, Nicholas and Barbara Bushong's daughter, Eva, married Michael Schwartz and had several children.7; 8
Aside from her children, little else of Eva's life in York County is known. However, two of her Bushong first cousins, John (V) and Jacob, also lived in York County and raised large families. Eva is thought to have died, in York County, Pennsylvania, sometime before 1770, when Michael has remarried and has a son, George Valentine Schwartz. Michael Schwartz's second wife was Susannah Lorah, who was born in 1752, in Amity, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Michael and Susannah had four children.
|
Michael died intestate, leaving no Will in 1786, and his estate was settled as reflected in these probate papers.View bond record here. However, after looking at the estate, it should be apparent that there are some conflicts between the number of children, as well as names and dates for the children from Michael's two wives.View full estate records here.
Wife Susannah... Issue Six children... George Schwartz, eldest son and heir at law of Michael Schwartz... and Michael, John, Anna Margaret, Elizabeth and Barbara. The said Michael, John, and Barbara being yet in the minority... [as of June 14 1791].
Extracted from Michael Schwartz's 1786 estate papers
If George Schwartz is the eldest son, then that means that Michael and Eva lost three children, prior to his death. Also, he used the same names of "John" and "Michael" when he had sons by his second marriage. Allowing this, we can say that Eva's and Michael's children, Michael, John, and Eva died before 1786, Further, two of their daughters, Anna Margaret and Elizabeth, would have indeed been above the age of minority, when the estate was filed in 1786, so that all fits.
But there is one remaining conflict that should be discussed. Eva's and Michael's oldest daughter, Anna Margaret. From existing genealogies, Margaret married Michael Ness. Michael Ness happens to be a son of John Jacob Ness, who immigrated to Pennsylvania on the Britain, 1731, The Ness family along with the Schwartz and Hans Boschung families knew each other from the voyage. Apparently, by 1784, Margaret had married because she had a daughter, Maria Magdalena Ness. If this is correct, it is not explainable why her name in the probate was not listed, Anna Margaret Ness or something similar. Further, existing genealogies, say that Margaret died "after July 5, 1784", but the date is not known. Well, her father, Michael Schwartz, died in 1786 and the probate papers which date from 1786 to 1792 list her as a Schwartz. Aside from the name discrepancy, the 1792 date is certainly after the 1784. And Margaret's husband remarried and had a son in 1794. Also, Jacob Ness' second wife was born in 1772, and she would have been 22 years old when her first child was born, which is completely plausible. So it could be calculated that Margaret died as late as the 1792 probate settlement.
Following Michael's death, Susannah is remarried to a Jacob Gunkle, who is mentioned as her husband in the estate papers in 1792.

More about Michael Schwartz
A little over a year before Eva Bushong immigrated, as listed in Professor I Daniel Rupp's 30,000 Names book, the Ship Britain which arrived in Philadelphia on Sept 21, 1731.6 Along with Hans and Barbara Boschung and their children were five immigrants named Schwartz. Along with a George Wilhelm, 22, are four other Schwartz passengers were, Hendrich Ludwig Schwartz, age 42, Maria Elisabeth Schwartz, 36 and two children, under age 16, Justus Rupert Schwartz, 11 and Johannes Schwartz, 8. Hendrich and Maria are believed to be Michael's parents and it is also thought that Johannes is Michael. Schwartz. His full name would be Johannes Michael Schwartz, which is virtually the same as his first son's name.
However, many Schwartz genealogists list Michael born in 1719. But with no mention of a Michael Schwartz on the 1731 Britannia's Passenger Manifest means Michael was likely under the age of five, and was not listed, because children under five traveled at no charge. That would put his date of birth between, 1726 and 1731, and probably closer to 1726. There is incidentally a Michael Schwartz, who fought in the American Revolutionary War, he is listed in the Pennsylvania, Revolutionary War Battalions and Militia Index, for military service between 1775 and 1783. However sources proving he was the same Michael still need to be located.

Nicholas' Son Johann George Henry Bushong
When Nicholas and Magdalena arrived, one of their sons who survived the voyage was listed as Henrich, (under age 16).6 There is little known about Henrich, and until recently, nothing past his arrival, causing speculation he had died. But 21 years later, in 1763, Henry is noted in baptismal records at the Canadochly Church, in York County, Pennsylvania,12 where, Nicholas' grandchild by his daughter was baptized. It was Eva and her husband, Michael Schwartz who baptized Anna Elisabeta Schwartz. One of the sponsors for the baptism was a Johann Georg Buschong and he is listed as Eva's brother.12 It had been theorized that Johann George could be a new son for Nicholas. But now with the knowledge, from the Waldfischbach Parish church records, that several of their children, had three first names, it is obvious that Johann George is Henrich. This is the first known use of George in Nicholas' or for that matter, the entire Bushong line. From there, it appears in every generation, beginning with Andrew's son, George, born in 1767.7 Family lore has it that Andrew's son was named after George Washington, and this is reinforced by a replacement tombstone, where his middle name is carved "Washington". For most, that proves it, yet it seems highly unlikely Andrew, who is proven, not overly fond of the military, would name his son after a Colonel George Washington. He named him after his brother, Johann George Henrich Bushong, or possibly, as will be seen, an uncle, Nicholas' brother.12
|
Johann Georg Henrich Boschung was born January 3, 1722 in Schmalenberg, Súdwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.10 We can assume that since Nicholas went by his middle name, that Henrich also went by the anglicized version of his middle name.
Henry lived in the Lancaster County area, including as they were split off, York and possibly Dauphine counties. As mentioned he is in York County sponsoring his niece, January 9, 1763. Sometime after that he moved down to Augusta County, (later Rockingham County) Virginia. He likely came with his brother, Andrew, who sometime before 1766, is shown with a land warrant for 120 Acres, at Cub Run. Later, May 24 1774, Henry Bushong was noted as having property adjoining a John Carpenter's 110 acres also on Cub Run. The Cub Run, or sometimes called Cub Creek was a small left hand branch of the Shenandoah River in Rockingham County.13
Henry died sometime after that, as his trail just disappears. In 1774, Henry would have been 52 years old. The question is, in those 52 years did Henry have a family who survived?
Entering the realm of speculation, there is one Pennsylvania Bushong whose ancestry is unknown (*ANCI in the tree) and whose date of birth coincides with Henry's likely age for having children. He is Frederick Bushong, but there could be others...
- Frederick Bushong, born about 1750, probably in York County, husband of Margaret Keplinger
|
|
The Shenandoah River by Moonlight by J.D. Woodward, 1873. Henry and brother Andrew lived on Cub Run (Creek), in Virginia. The Cub Run is on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. It was where Andrew's sons, George and Henry were born.
|
If his name is transcribed correctly, Frederick could possibly be a descendant of Henry. It is a fact that Bushong families who could be the potential ancestors and parents for him, are pretty well accounted for. So by process of elimination, who else could the father be, other than Henry? There is one interesting coincidence that lends credibility to the idea. In 1762, Henry's sister, Eva's son was named Fredrick.7 It is possible that the name Frederick or its variation, is from her husband's Schwartz side, or maybe it was after her nephew, a son of Henry? What happened to Henry's and his would-be line with Frederick? It is not known. Maybe Henry or envisioned son, Frederick, never had any had children? Or maybe they did, but were all daughters? With their name changed, when they married, the surname could have just disappeared from the family? That said, there are several other Bushong's charted in the Bushong United Family Tree, whose ancestry is not known, that could fit as grandchildren.
